Against Wildfires, AI Comes to the Aid of Firefighters

FireTracking has developed an algorithm capable of detecting a wildfire in just three minutes, with a very low false alarm rate. Successfully tested in New Caledonia, the system is being deployed this year in Indre-et-Loire, France. Some 27,000 hectares are reduced to ashes each year on average in New Caledonia — a heavy toll paid to wildfires. By comparison, this is more than the total burned area for mainland France in 2023, 2020, and 2019 combined, even though this overseas territory — a biodiversity jewel home to hundreds of endemic species — represents only 3% of France’s total land area. This alarming fact struck Jean-Simon Chaudier, who fell under New Caledonia’s spell while on assignment there for Capgemini. A consultant specializing in the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI), Chaudier decided to put his expertise at the service of wildfire prevention. He brought together a team including Guillaume Cier, an experienced entrepreneur in the high-tech sector; Aimé Lachapelle, president of the incubator Kaukana Ventures; and Franck Abihssira, a partner at digital data consulting firm Emerton Data. With their support, Chaudier was able to recruit the talent needed to found FireTracking in 2022, headquartered between Paris, Avignon, and Nouméa.

How Artificial Intelligence Is Protecting France’s Forests from Wildfires

From the Alpes-Maritimes to New Caledonia, artificial intelligence is serving nature. Thanks to smart cameras and algorithms capable of detecting fire outbreaks, firefighters now have access to a more efficient surveillance network. On Mont Chauve, 870 meters above sea level overlooking Nice, an unusual silhouette scans the horizon. Two large globes rotate tirelessly, like the mechanical eyes of a science-fiction robot. Yet this curious machine is no gadget — it’s a surveillance camera capable of detecting a fire outbreak within seconds from over 12 kilometers away. Since its installation, it has already identified 14 wildfires, as well as numerous controlled burnings — sometimes illegal — according to the City of Nice, which in 2023 launched a large-scale action plan to prevent wildfire risks across its territory.

AI to Detect Wildfires in Indre-et-Loire

The FireTracking, Emerton Data, and Axione consortium is deploying its artificial intelligence solution to detect wildfires in Indre-et-Loire. A consortium made up of FireTracking — a startup specializing in AI-powered wildfire detection — Emerton Data, a research, innovation, and AI consulting firm, and Axione, a key player in connectivity, has won a call for projects launched by the Indre-et-Loire Departmental Council, in collaboration with the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS), to deploy an automatic detection and location solution for wildfires in natural areas using innovative, cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology. Each year, the Indre-et-Loire department faces more than 300 fire outbreaks, with a rise in such incidents fueled by climate change and increasingly dry vegetation. To tackle this growing threat, the department will roll out, on a large scale, the consortium’s intelligent detection and location solution — including the installation of a network of cameras and deployment of dedicated software — enabling surveillance of nearly 95% of the department’s forested areas.

With AI, FireTracking Detects Wildfires in Indre-et-Loire

To help firefighters respond quickly in areas prone to wildfires, FireTracking has developed a SaaS solution that combines multiple AI models with camera networks transmitting real-time information about the monitored territories. After a successful first deployment in New Caledonia, the startup is now setting its sights on Indre-et-Loire, where it plans to install its systems at 12 sites to monitor 95% of the department’s forested areas.
